The printed circuit board surface also serves as a protection against oxidation of the underlying copper and increases the storage stability.
The main function is to facilitate and improve the solder. The surface of the board depends of storage stability, use and price.
 

1. Cu-Sn/Pb melted 

 

Layer thicknesses: 1-20 microns

 

Advantages:
 - Very good solderability
 - Lower process temperatures
 - Good storage stability (at least 12 months)
 
Disadvantages:
 - Not RoHS Compliant
 - Limited suitability for fine pitch
 - Pads are not planned
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

2. Ni-Au RoHs compliant

 
 Chemical gold is an extremely planar circuit board surface, and it has very good oxidation characteristics. It is ideal for a fine pitch.
 
 Advantages:
 - Best AVAILABLE surface
 - Absolutely flat
 - Ideal for fine-pitch surface and SMD applications
 - Storage time for processing up to 12 months
 - Very good solderability
 
Disadvantages:
 - extra charge
 - High process temperatures
   (Min 90° chem. Ni CM for about 20 minutes.) 
 
 
 
 

3. HAL RoHs compliant

 
 Layer thicknesses: 1-20 microns (50 microns to few)
 
 Advantages:
 - Good solderability
 - Good reflow characteristics
 - Good storage stability (at least 12 months)
 
 Disadvantages:
 - Limited suitability for fine pitch
 - Poor planarity
